SOGNEFJORD EXPEDITION

Awesome all-inclusive SUP adventure over 6 days in the UNESCO protected Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord. Mountains, waterfalls, porpoise, sea eagles, seals, fjord side restaurant & breathtakingly beautiful camp sites. Traditional Norwegian food and lots of surprises.

SUP Norway

As those that have shared adventures with SUP Norway know. There is so much more to our expeditions than we can display on a web page.

This is our passion.

We love to surprise you with the unexpected and curious along the way. From local Norwegian delicacies to secret spots and spontaneous activities, we also love challenging preconceptions and exceeding our guests expectations in providing outstanding life experiences.

Our focus is on fun and being totally present with ourselves and nature. The grandeur and sheer majesty of the nature we are blessed with in Western Norway is truly awe inspiring and our guests often report profound experiences on the expeditions.

Want to hear it from someone else? Check out customer reviews here

These are minimalist, unsupported, ‘Leave no trace’ SUP expeditions. We only use the best quality gear and the locations vary from established campsites with electricity & showers to wild camping sites with waterfall baths for the hardy. All the locations we visit are exquisitely beautiful.

Nærøyfjord

Sognefjord is the longest & deepest navigable fjord in the world and one of it’s arms – Nærøyfjord – is undoubtedly the most spectacular.
Imagine paddling beautiful Nærøyfjord, surrounded by shear mountains and snow-covered peaks that stand 1700 meters above sea level, with picturesque villages and literally hundreds of waterfalls along it’s length.
Whether spotting porpoise or sea-eagles, paddling up to a thundering waterfall, laughing around the camp-fire or just chilling in the most beautiful nature there is, people who join us here are invariably blown-away by the experience. Your drinking supply is from the many granite filtered pure waterfalls. It is the sweetest water you have ever tasted, guaranteed! No filter required. If you are after adventure and incredible nature, you can find it here with SUP Norway. This is definitely a bucket-list trip.

Long days

In the summer we can have up to 20 hours of light, it never really gets dark and our days are long and relaxed. Wake up with the waterfalls sounding like distant surf through your tent. Brave one for a cool wash, then breakfast with your friends to talk about the coming day’s paddle.

Relaxed pace

When all are ready, we break camp and launch our boards. Gliding under towering cliffs, you teach yourself to paddle silently so as to take in your surroundings totally. We pause often as opportunities present themselves to film, photograph or just take in the magnificence.

Varied camp-sites lend themselves to different activities and at the end of the day you will find yourself in good company laughing around the camp fire or taking some time alone for a moment of zen in some of the most wonderful surroundings mother nature has to offer.

Intimate

Group numbers are kept small to provide an intimate feeling to the expedition and to minimise our environmental footprint. A low guest to guide ratio is maintained to maximise safety and ensure personal attention.

We are a very friendly, small company who love SUP and nature and want to share this amazing location and experience.

Food

Three healthy meals a day are provided.

We use the best quality Norwegian produced tour food for breakfast and dinner. Lunches are freshly made by your guides each day and are usually traditional Norwegian fare. For the third day we have an evening meal at a restaurant right by the fjord and a cooked breakfast the next day.

We have menu options for Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Lactose free & Gluten free. (If pre-ordered)

FAQs

For the Sognefjord expedition (5/6 days). Guests will need to have SUP experience in order to enjoy the days of paddling and to allow the group to travel at practical pace. An average and healthy individual that engages in some form of regular exercise should have no problems.

Please be realistic in assessing your ability to complete a stand up paddling expedition in varying weather conditions covering  50-60Km over 5 days (Sognefjord Expedition).

The conditions are mostly calm and stable for the summer but we can occasionally run into some wind and a bit of chop, especially at the beginning and end of the season.

To take part in a Sognefjord expedition you should:

  • Have a good solid paddle technique.
  • Are confident in your ability to paddle 15 Km (standing up).
  • Can control an SUP effectively in varying weather conditions and perform self-rescue.*
  • Can effectively Knee-paddle (not sitting) against a headwind.
  • Can swim 100 meters in open water.

* This means being able to handle choppy conditions, right a capsized loaded SUP, get back onboard, retrieve your paddle and continue paddling without assistance.

If you are uncertain of your suitability for the expedition, please contact Titus for advice.

Please note: You will be asked to return a ‘Personal details form’ immediately after booking. Guests arriving with a physical or psychological condition or contraindicator that was not declared in their personal details form may be precluded from participating in the expedition with no recourse for compensation. (Contraindicators can include; obesity, epilepsy, pregnancy, heart conditions, psychosis etc. . .)

You must be at least 18 to take part in SUP Norway expeditions.

We occasionally allow 15-17 year olds if they meet the following criteria:

  • Accompanied by legal guardian.
  • Experienced, powerful SUP paddler.
  • Must have good strength & endurance.
  • Must have mature outlook to be part of an adult group.

A quick note on travel insurance:

Personal travel Insurance is absolutely essential when venturing abroad. When selecting a travel insurance policy at a very minimum you should be covered for medical expenses and emergency repatriation.

We strongly recommend that your policy covers personal liability, curtailment, loss of luggage and personal effects and anything that may be specific for you (possible pregnancy, pre-existing medical conditions etc)

Please ensure you have your policy number and emergency telephone number for your insurance company with you on the expedition (a card for example). If this is unavailable please ensure you have the necessary information required by your insurance company in case of an emergency.

Do not worry about how to pack. Just stick to the gear list you will be fine. We give full instruction and help with packing when you are here.

See image below:

  • All gear used on land is in the 75 ltrs drybag that we supply and is never opened on the water.
  • The provided 30 ltrs waterproof rucksack is for things you need to access whilst on the water.
  • The tent is in it’s own waterproof bag.

Excess gear, valuables and passports can be safely left at the basecamp.
SUP Norway - Packing

Every guest gets their own tent. You only share if you want to.

  • We use MSR Elixir 1 & 2 person tents.
  • We show you how to use them (very easy). They are roomy, dry, comfortable & and very popular with our guests.
  • You can usually even have a 2 person tent for yourself if you wish.
Tents by fjord
  • Electricity and charging are available at base camp & day 3.
  • The longest time we are without electricity is 2.5 days.
  • The expedition leader carries a large charging battery. Some guests choose to bring their own.
  • Please learn how to use the ‘battery saver’ mode on your phone correctly. You can have your camera, messenger & phone apps active and your battery will still last for days.
  • Most guests experience 4G for 95% of the expedition.
  • Telenor is the service that covers the expedition area (Telia does not).

Top tip: It is a good idea to check the train/bus times between Bergen airport-Gudvangen before arranging your flights. The last departure from Bergen airport is about 15:30. If your flight lands after 14:30 you should consider arriving the day before and overnight in Bergen or Voss. This is a nice and relaxed way of doing it.

Arrival day is the first date of your expedition. e.g. For the 17-22 June Sognefjord expedition, arrival day would be the 17th June.

Your expedition leader will join your expedition’s WhatsApp group a day or two before arrival day to ask your ETAs into Gudvangen.

The bus stop ‘Vang camping’ is closest to our base camp at ‘Gudvangen camping’.
Gudvangen camping is just 100 meters away across the road. The other bus stop (Gudvangen E16) is in Gudvangen itself. If you get off here, it’s is a 500 meter walk back up the road on the other side to the base camp.

You will then find us here:
basecamp-1basecamp-1
You may turn up when you like on arrival day before 18:00 but it’s nice to get here earlier in the afternoon and spend the day resting after your journey, getting your gear, exploring Gudvangen and getting acquainted with the group.

There will be electricity, showers, refreshments and cool company. After you are settled in and the group is all here, we’ll have a briefing and issue you with all necessary gear and food for the expedition. There will be a little ceremony and then the BBQ starts at 18:00 if everyone is here, or 20:00 at the latest. We will start paddling the following morning.

We will usually arrive back at Gudvangen at approximately 12:00 – 12:30.

Please arrange your travel to depart on the last day after 13:00.

If your flight from Bergen airport is before 19:00, you may need to book a taxi to Voss (https://vosstaxi.no) and then a train to Bergen (https://www.vy.no/en) to make your plane.

  • Gudvangen – Voss: Mon-Fri 1-4 people Nok 1350,- / 5-8 people Nok 1800,-
  • Gudvangen – Voss: Sat-Sun 1-4 people Nok 1600,- / 5-8 people Nok 2400,-

Perhaps talk with others on your expedition’s Whatsapp group to share a taxi.

If you wish to stay with us at Gudvangen camping for an extra night after the expedition, you are most welcome and may borrow your expedition tent or stay in our group ‘Lavvu’ (Teepee). The camping fee (Nok 250,- per tent) is not included for this night.

We have guests from over 25 different countries every year and each of them have different customs. We have been asked to provide guidance on tipping so please read on if you are from a country where this is customary.

While our expedition leaders receive fair wages and don’t rely on tips for their livelihood, tips for exceptional service are always appreciated though never expected. They won’t be offended if you don’t tip, but they will certainly appreciate the gesture if you do.

While tipping isn’t mandatory in Norway, it’s a nice gesture to show appreciation for a good expedition leader/guide, especially for multi-day tours, and a tip of around 10% of the tour cost is generally considered appropriate. Perhaps more if tipping as a couple or group.

Please note: Tipping is a personal transaction between guests and the expedition leaders/guides. SUP Norway management are not involved in any way.

Here’s a breakdown:

  • Tipping is not expected, but appreciated.
  • Unlike in some countries, tipping isn’t a cultural norm in Norway, and service personnel are paid a decent wage.
  • Consider a tip for good or exceptional service. If you’re happy with your tour guide’s performance, a tip is a thoughtful way to show your appreciation.
  • 10% of the tour cost is a good guideline.

Short answer, yes. 😁

Many guests bring alcohol. With wine in bags/boxes being a favourite method. It’s pleasant to share a glass around the campfire after a great day paddling on the fjord.

On day three of the Sognefjord expedition, we are in a small village and have a restaurant meal. Wine & local beers are available at the restaurant and beer at a small local shop here.

Please note that in Norway wine & spirits are only available from special shops called ‘Vinmonopolet’. Beer can be bought in shops and no alcohol is sold on Sundays unless you are eating in a restaurant.

It’s a good idea to buy any wine or spirits at the airport or city center in Bergen or Voss before arriving at Gudvangen.

(Please note: We strongly urge guests to be moderate with alcohol consumption on the expedition. It is no fun for anyone if a guest is hungover and can also be a safety concern. Guests are not permitted on/in the water if under the influence of alcohol.)

Card Payments

Secure online card payments from the expedition page booking sections.

When using card payments we recommend using credit cards for booking your expedition as they often include complimentary travel insurance. Please check with your Credit card provider to find out what benefits you may have when using them.

Paypal

For alternative payment method with Paypal please email us. If you would prefer to book via Paypal, we can send you a payment request. Paypal requests can be paid with a credit card without the need for a Paypal account.

Bitcoin

If you’re booking from abroad Bitcoin is often the simplest way to pay. There are no currency conversion fees, no foreign transaction charges from your bank, and no declined-card surprises — your payment settles directly to SUP Norway through the Bitcoin network, the same way regardless of which country you’re in. It’s faster than an international bank transfer and you don’t share any card details along the way.

Please note: BTC ‘on-chain’  payments only. We do not accept Lightning payments.

We process Bitcoin payments through our own self-hosted node using BTCPay Server, so there’s no third-party payment processor in between. If you already use Bitcoin, sending the payment takes under a minute and a typical transaction is confirmed on the network within typically ten minutes.

When booking, you will see an option to pay with Bitcoin on the checkout page.

See how to pay with Bitcoin here.

Travelling between ‘Bergen – Gudvangen’ is usually a train/bus journey.

Train/bus: Bergen train station – Gudvangen

  • Please note that when travelling from Bergen, your journey will begin at the train station, input ‘Bergen stasjon’ & ‘ Vang camping‘ in the from/to field.
  • There are two stops in Gudvangen. ‘Gudvangen E16‘ & ‘Vang camping’. The latter is the closest to Gudvangen camping where we are based (100 meters)
  • Note:
    • If linking with the VY450 bus, simply purchase 1 ticket from ‘vy.no’
    • If linking to the 950 bus, you must pay for the bus part of the journey between Voss – Gudvangen separately. Get the ‘Skyss Billett’ app (Android – iOS) to pre book ticket (Zone E to J) or pay with cash on the day.

If travelling from Flåm to Gudvangen please avoid the ferry unless you want to spoil the surprise of discovery. There is a shuttle bus.

We don’t use or supply wetsuits. We paddle in board-shorts & t-shirts or long-sleeved tops depending on sun or cloud. If raining, we put on a shell top & trousers. If cold, an extra warm layer.

The water temperature is cool/cold. If you do fall in (should happen rarely), you are dry again in 5 mins and every paddler will have a towel and warm top to hand if needed.

Paddling in a wetsuit for over 2 hours will make you sweaty, smelly and actually colder than if you paddle dry. You should be at a skill level that you very rarely (if ever) fall in from a 30″ wide touring board.

If your expedition is in ‘shoulder season’ (May or late August/September), if you are from a warm climate or perhaps just feel the cold more than most. Please feel free to bring and wear whatever you prefer for cooler climates.

Whatever you choose, please make sure that your outer shell layer (water proof jacket and trousers) really work by shower testing them for 5 minutes.

SUP Norway - cooling off

Excess luggage & valuables (Passports, laptops etc) can be left at the base camp in our HQ cabin or at a secure room at the campsite. It is a low population/low crime area and most guests do this.

Most days are between 4-6 hours paddling 9-15 Km (9-24Km on the Storfjord expedition). The focus is to experience these magnificent areas at a relaxed and enjoyable pace whilst being present, we do not focus on endurance/distance paddling. We also often have additional paddles from the campsites to see a special place or if guests want more. See the expedition outline documents here for specific distances for each day:

  • SOGNEFJORD – https://supnorway.com/docs/sognefjord-expedition-outline.pdf
  • STORFJORD – https://supnorway.com/docs/storfjord-expedition-outline.pdf

We have almost 20 hours of daylight so we are in no hurry and the pace is steady and relaxed. The Itinerary is flexible according to weather, group interest and opportunities that may arise. Porpoises, photography & filming, waterfall swims etc

Please be aware that we unfortunately cannot allow pregnant women to take part in the expeditions due to – but not limited to – the following risks:

  • High likelihood of sudden, unexpected immersion in very cold water.
  • Pressure and impact to the abdomen during regain to an SUP after a fall.
  • Possible necessity of extreme exertion & stress in case of adverse weather or seas.

If you feel there may be a possibility of becoming pregnant before your expedition we recommend making sure this is included in your travel insurance. Many travel insurance companies include a pregnancy clause.

For the arrival night we will be staying at Gudvangen camping nestled between 1500 meter towering cliffs with a view of the majestic Kjelfoss. You will be in your issued expedition tents. It is also possible to rent a cabin ‘hytte’ yourself (not included). Booking of cabins.
For the other nights we will be wild camping or at established camp-sites. Toilet facilities vary from flushing and hot showers, traditional compost and a waterfall wash for the hardy and at one site on the expedition, a walk into the woods with a spade and a fjord swim.

These are the views that surround us on arrival day at ‘Gudvangen camping’. we shall BBQ, get to know each other and prepare for our adventure.

Most of the areas we paddle in are quite protected and beautiful. We try to avoid head-winds and wavy conditions where possible. If conditions deteriorate to a level outside the group’s comfort zone then we can wait it out, paddle down wind to another destination or also re-location via road or boat may also be possible.

We have not yet experienced a day when we could not paddle. If this ever happens, there is always lots to do at all the stops in this amazing environment.

We do not offer payment by installments as we do not have a high enough demand for this service. However, there are several apps that can help you with saving for a holiday, such as:

Alternatively, it is fairly easy to set up a savings account and an automatic monthly payment into it with your existing bank
